Perspective

25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I received a stoning. Three times I was shipwrecked; for a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from bandits, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers and sisters;[a] 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, hungry and thirsty, often without food, cold and naked. 28 And, besides…

Scrooge: The Miser

Luke 12:13-21New Revised Standard Version The Parable of the Rich Fool 13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, “Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” 16 Then he told them a parable: “The land of a…

From The Heart

Matthew 15:10-20 (NRSV) Things That Defile 10 Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, “Listen and understand: 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles.” 12 Then the disciples approached and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?” 13 He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14 Let them alone; they are…

That Didn’t Go As Planned

Genesis 40:9-15 (nrSV) 9 So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “In my dream there was a vine before me, 10 and on the vine there were three branches. As soon as it budded, its blossoms came out and the clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.” 12 Then Joseph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three…

Pastor Notes – December

I said this last month but where has 2021 gone? I have a love/hate relationship with time. For example, our oldest daughter just got her drivers license and her first vehicle. And while I must admit I am excited to have another driver deliver to dance class and piano lessons, it does break my heart a bit that my kids are growing up! And while there are times that I wish they could live with us forever; I know that…

Pastor Notes

As slow as 2020 seemed to creep by, 2021 seems to have done the opposite. I went to Home Depot yesterday and it looked like the North Pole. As thegreat Bing Crosby says, “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.” And I am usually, like many of you, wait one minute, let us enjoy Thanksgivingfirst! But I feel different this year. Last year during the Christmas Season, we were hitting the peak of the Winter Covid-19 spike. We had…

Pastor Notes – June

One of the common phrases that is used around our house is, “We don’t do that.” When our children act out or fight with each other, we let them know that “We don’t do that.” Part of the reason that the word “we” is used is so they will always know we are a tribe, a family community. And being a part of the Mearns Tribe means we will always be there for each other and there are certain…
